Error Loading page in Safari or Chrome when also using SSO
If you are using SSO and receive the message,
"Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand. Size of a request header field exceeds server limit.”, this usually means a cookie or header (often a cookie) has grown too large for the web server to process.
Or
"Request Header Fields Too Large
The server refused this request because the request header fields are too large."
Here’s how you can fix it in Safari:
Clear Cookies for the Affected Site Only
- In Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
- In the search box, type gsu.edu
- Select it and click Remove ALL.
- Reload the site.
This fixes the issue in most cases because it removes bloated cookies that exceed header size limits.
Here's how you can fix it in Chrome
1) Clear cookies for just that site (best first step)
Open the site that’s failing (even if it errors).
Click the lock icon (or tune icon) in the address bar → Cookies and site data (or Site settings).
Find that domain → Remove cookies/site data.
Refresh.
Alternative:
Go to
chrome://settings/siteDataSearch the site domain → Remove all shown.
